Thank you Volvo! We are incredibly happy to receive this state of the art crash test dummy gifted to us by Swedish company Volvo. We have named it Nils in honor of Nils Bohlin.
Nils Bohlin was Volvo’s first Chief Safety Engineer and the inventor of the three-point safety belt in 1959. Nils and Volvo later offered this breakthrough in innovation freely across the motor industry.
Until the late 1950s, automobiles had only a two-point safety harness that offered limited protection. Two-point safety belts covered only the lower abdomen, making the belt little to no use in high-speed collisions. Sadly, a relative of the then Volvo CEO Gunnar Engelau met a fatal end in such a way.
The fatality led to Volvo hiring their first-ever Chief Safety Officer. Nils Bohlin. Nils had previously worked on fighter planes. He designed a new seat belt using his existing knowledge of four-point harnesses used for airplanes.
He set to work designing a safety belt that could provide a driver and passengers substantially more protection against high-impact collisions.
The final product was the three-point safety belt. Volvo and Bohlin decided the belt could help save lives and increase safety for all automotive drivers. They gave the design to the automotive industry freely. The rest is, as they say, history.
We will now continue our test flights with Nils at the helm, collecting all the data. Helping Jetson to create an EVTOL with robust safety features.
